Winter Recipe

Mmm we are in the thick of winter it feels like in Michigan. Not necessarily where we get plowed with snow but with maybe some seasonal depression as we can literally count on our hands the times we have seen the sun this month. Plus the holidays have past.

With little green to be seen, winter can wear on so many creatives. Observing the season shifts and letting myself shift with it has been the biggest lesson of love and grace, giving me a much more enjoyable winter. Slowing down to source my own inspirations, see what needs priority and planning with pleasure.

The opportunity for me to grow a small cut flower garden this coming 2023 season arose and I grabbed at the chance to sow some seed learn, observe,  grow some specialty flowers and spread joy. I knew I needed to be all in on this decision as it would be a time, money and family commitment. Still with all of me I knew it was time to return to soil as my whole heart is here to worship the earth and through that ourselves and one another!

So the planning began, everything from what flowers to get from caring about the colors, lifespan, maintenance and the needs of each individual  seed and flower. To then the germination, hardening off, planting and succession planting, garden sketches, bad sketches…. better sketches, reading and research again and again.

For now my my mind is spinning this winter! Marking my calendar up with garden duty dates in order to truly cultivate something. Flowers remind me my why… Why I get out of bed in the winter and why I want to work to see the summer sun.

Letting myself find my why a few winters back, through observing the season shifts and letting myself shift with it has been the biggest lesson of love and grace. Slowing down to source my own inspirations, see what needs priority and planning with pleasure is my mid-winter recipe for success.
